What local actor has appeared in numerous plays regarding the birth of Christ, sports a humped back, and loves Mountain Dew? Abraham the Camel! If you’ve spent the holidays in Lexington County during the past two decades, you’ve probably encountered Abraham, the Mountain Dew-guzzling camel.
When the need for a camel arose for their church’s Christmas program over twenty years ago, Cliff and Margaret Fisher prayed for a way to help and ultimately found an answer to their prayers-they adopted a three-month-old camel!
At that point, “Abraham” would come into the house for bottle feedings, often distributed from repurposed, sanitized Mountain Dew bottles. This process led to Abraham’s infatuation with Mountain Dew as an adult!
Abraham found himself basking in the spotlight as part of the livestock actors in several Christmas pageants, numerous local events, and dramas such as This Man Called Jesus. When the drama concluded production, Cliff created Jesus is His Name Ministries with Abraham by his side. Abraham quickly developed a huge following as a local celebrity. People are drawn to community events featuring Abraham, and their reactions continue to be warm and positive as they witness the camel’s personality and famed relationship with Mountain Dew. He has performed for over 26 years in church programs, VBS sessions, nursing homes, and school events; he ventures out to visit the public once or twice each week.
Caring for an unusual and large pet like Abraham is a lot like owning and caring for a horse. “He’s just like a big dog; I never told him he was a camel. He just follows me around the farm,” jokes Cliff.
